This year’s FIRST Global Challenge, held in Athens, Greece, was more than a competition—it was a showcase of young minds stepping up to tackle some of the world’s most pressing issues. Among them, Team Haiti emerged as one of the Top 10 Innovators in the World, bringing global attention to their innovative solution to food insecurity in rural Haiti.
2024 Theme: Feeding the Future
Each year, the FIRST Global Challenge includes an Innovation Challenge that ties into the competition’s theme. This year’s theme, “Feeding the Future,” explored how technology can address challenges in sustainable agriculture and food insecurity. Students were encouraged to look for innovative solutions, using STEM to bridge gaps in real-world problems.
The challenge aimed to inspire students not only to become change-makers now but to lay the groundwork for future contributions to global progress.
Team Haiti’s Breakthrough: Harnessing Leaf Protein Concentrate
Team Haiti rose to the occasion with their project, which focused on combating malnutrition in rural Haiti through leaf protein concentrate (LPC). Using the leaves of black-eyed peas—a resilient and nutrient-rich legume that is a staple in Haitian agriculture—the team developed a method to extract protein-rich mass from the leaves.
This approach provides a sustainable and cost-effective protein source for both human and livestock consumption. While LPC has been studied and developed in various forms since the 18th century, Team Haiti localized the concept, tailoring it to Haiti’s unique agricultural needs. Their innovation has the potential to significantly alleviate food insecurity in their homeland.
Why It Matters
Haiti, like many nations, faces challenges in food security exacerbated by climate change, limited resources, and economic instability. Team Haiti’s project represents a practical solution grounded in science and inspired by their intimate understanding of their country’s needs. Their innovation highlights the role of youth-driven problem solving in addressing global challenges. It is also a testament to the incredible impact STEM education can have when combined with local knowledge and a drive to make a difference.
The Bigger Picture
The Innovation Challenge is a vital part of the FIRST Global experience. It encourages participants to think beyond the competition and into the real world, asking themselves:
• How can I use what I’ve learned to make a difference?
• What impact can technology have in addressing global challenges?
Team Haiti’s achievement demonstrates that the answers to these questions don’t have to wait for the future—they can begin now.
A Brighter Future
In Athens, Team Haiti stood as a beacon of possibility—not just for their nation but for youth everywhere. Their achievement is a reminder that no matter the obstacles, young people have the creativity, determination, and vision to create meaningful change.
As the team now looks to scale their project and inspire others, their journey serves as a call to action for communities worldwide: invest in young innovators, provide them with resources, and believe in their power to transform the future.
Congratulations, Team Haiti, for feeding not only the future but also the world’s hope for what’s possible!
Team Haiti owes this remarkable accomplishment to the ingenuity, dedication, and expert mentorship of Dr. Luíza Favaratto. A renowned researcher at the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES) in Brazil, Dr. Favaratto provided invaluable guidance as the team delved into the science of Leaf Protein Concentrate (LPC) to address food insecurity in rural Haiti.
